THE RUAHINE TRAGEDY.
ARREST OF ROTTERMAN. Per Press 'Association. Wellintgon, January 3. As the result of a well-laid plan, the police on Saturday effected the arrest of the young German, Arthur Hotterman, who was wanted on a charge oi having murdered a farmer named McCann, together with his wife and child, at Ruahine, nine miles from Mangaweka, on or about December. 28th. Word was received by' the police in Wellington on Friday evening that a man answering llotterman's description had on the previous afternoon put in an apeparance at a whare at Karon Rode (near Cape Torawhiti) where men are engaged in connection with the lighthouse.
The police eventually went on to Te Kamara station, and there they found Rotterman sitting down in a clump of bushes alongside a tree, apparently in hiding. They covered him with a revolver, and he was taken in charge without offering any resistance. Next morning he was taken over the hills to Makara, and on to Lambton station, where he was taken over by the authorities at a quarter to six last evening. The accused, who is 21 years of age, is of an athletic type, and when arrested was wearing a blue suit and white straw hat. REMANDED TO WANCANUI. Wellington, January 4. Rotterman, charged with murder, appeared at the Court this morning and was remanded to appear at Wanganui on 12th January.
