Mr George Hogben, Inspector-Gen eral of Schools, New Zealand.
Mr George Hogben, M.A. is In-spector-General of Schools in Ne« Zealand, having held that poso-nn since the retirement of che Eov. W J. Habens in 1899. Mr Hogben gra duated at Cambridge Univc.'sity, anc has always been looked upon as one of the leading educationists in A us. tralasia. He is a member of the University Senate of New Zealand and represented New Zealand at the Empire Education Conference in Lon don in 1907. His retirement from his present position takes place on March 31st next, but it is generally understood that he will not sever his connection with the educational movement, but will become a prominent member of the Board of Education set lip under the Education Amendment Act of last session. Mr Hogben wa< closely connected with the inception of technical education in Now Zea land, and he was one of the prime movers of this branch of the Dominion's system.
K.B. Mr Hennessy, Melbourne. f Dr. Herbert Maitland, Sydney. Mr J. G. Wilson, President of tin Board of Agriculture, New Zealand. Sir James Glenny Wilson is presi dent of the Board of Agriculture, which was recently set up by thf Massey Government to consider anc' advise on matters connected with the agricultural industry. Sir James wah born at Hawick in 1849, and ha* always been in the forefront of the farming industry in New Zealand. He was educated at Bruce Castle, Tottenham,, and completed at London and Edinburgh Universities. He came out to New Zealand when he was twentyfive years of age, and commenced sheep-farming in Rangitikei. He was elected member for Foxton in 1882, and he represented the district till 1890. Then when the new electorate of Palmerston was established he wars again chosen by the people and he remained their representative till 1893. In the latter year he contested the Otaki seat, won it, and held it for three years, iAt the inception of the New Zealand Farmers' Union in 1900 he was elected as president, and he has remained as head of that or ganisation ever .since. He has also held the presidency of the Agricultural Societies Association, and was a member of the 1907 Harvester Trust Inquiry Board. Sir James is at present the holder of land at Bulls, in the western Manawatu.

The Royal Victorian Order Grand Cross was conferred on Prince Louis of Battenberg. Turn and Sydney Sim Bbbvtobb. The King , created seven French generals Knights Commanders of Saint Michael and Saint George. The King has established a military cross in silver in recognition of officers' distinguished services. Only captains and inferior officers, also warrant officers in the Imperial, Indian and Colonial forces are eligible. It ranks next to Victoria Cross. The recipients include Lieutenant E. L. Conran, and Lieutenant-Comander Coleman, the Sydney's engineer, who has been promoted commander. Mr Henry Newbolt, the poet, and Mr Frank Dyson, the Astronomer Royal, have been knighted.
