CRITICAL SITUATION. TURKEY AND THE BRITISH WARSHIPS. London, October 2. There is a critical situation between Turkey and the Entente. It is understood that the Porte intends to make demands on Great Britain in respect to the station of certain British warships. STEAMER LETTSY MINED IN THE NORTH SEA. London, October 1. A mine sank the steamer Lettsy on tho North Sea. The crew was saved. THE LEIPZIG'S WORK. STEAMER BANKFIELDER SUNK WITH CARGO OF SUGAR. (Received 11.30 a.m.) London, October 2. The cruiser Leipzig sank the steamer Bankfielder, which had a cargo of half a million dollars' worth of sugar. The crew landed at Callao.
NEUTRAL SHIPPING. FRIENDLY ATTITUDE OF BRITAIN TO THE U.S.A. (Received 10.25 a.m.) New York, October 2. Sir C. Rice conferred with the Stoate Department officials concerning the seizure of American copper in neutral vessels bound for neutral ports on tho assumption that it was destined for Krupps. Tin Embassador intimated that Great Britain would indemnify the owner and also could not interfere with Auier.can shipments,, of foodstulfs to Holland. . President Wilson informed inquirers that Great Britain had a moot ■friendly attitude regarding posi'ble non-neutral shipments, and he had no doubt that a satisfactory arrangement would be readied.
