HOSPITAL BOARD.
At the monthly meeting of the Hospital Boa"', held this morning, there were present: Messrs J • McAllister (chairman), J. Smith, W. 'Rogers, C. D. Sole, A. Meredith and E. Hiue. REPORTS. The Medical Superintendent (Hr. Steven) reported: During August nineteen patients were admitted, nineteen were discharged, and there were no deaths. Twelve patients remained in hospital at the end of the month. There were eight operations under anaesthetics. There are three patients in the isolation ward.
The Gardener reported: There is nothing to report on this month. The new drying green is now ready for seed. Vegetables are getting scarce. The Sanitary Inspector reported: Infections diseases: Two cases of scarlet fever were notified in Stratford Borough. Both patients were removed to the hospital and the premises were disinfected. One death from phthisis was notified in Stratford County. The room recently occupied by deceased was disinfected, the bedding burnt, and the room is being thoroughly spring-cleaned. Disinfection was carried out at premises in Stratford County after a recovered scarlet fever case. Stratford Borough: Two recommendations in connection with drainage and plumbing were complied with. Two nuisances caused by keeping fowls were abated. Two new premises without WIC. accommodation were inspected. One livery stable was inspected. The butchers were asked to protect meat as far as practicable from dust and flies. The fish shops, fruit shops, marts, and one hoarding-house were inspected. Two cases of apples, 251 b of bananas and half a hundredweight of carrots were condemned and destroyed. Stratford County: One butcher closed his premises, as he was not prepared to comply with the regulations. One butcher was asked to protect moat as far as practicable from dust and flies.
The Visiting Committee reported that everything was in good order at the hospital. The new building was completed, and would be occupied during the week. GENERAL. The Palmerston Board wrote asking for endorsement of a movement to have the Act amended in the direction of making a Hospital Board responsible for all its patients, and not making responsible for the foes the Board in whose district the patient had previously resided.—The secretary (Mr Penn) read an account from the Whangarei Board for treatment of a man who had come from the Stratford district. The man had lived in the Stratford district for a sufficient time to make the Board responsible. The Whangarei Board had not collected any part of the amount from the patient and had not forwarded their account for eight months. —On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr Sole, it was decided to endorse the movement.
Tho gardener complained that on a recent morning he found evidence of a horse having been on tho lawn, and from enquiries he had made ho was able to accuse a person (whom ho named) of being the owner of tho horse in question. The owner of the horse had no grazing for his horse, but assured him (the gardener) that he always made sure the hospital gates were closed when he put it on the street.—The chairman .said he had made inquiries but sufficient evidence was not available to bring a prosecution against the person the gardener named.
