Mr Alfred Rore has consented to contest the Southern Maori seat, states a Blenheim telegram. . Mr W.-Hatha way, chairman of the Stratford County Council, received word' yesterday of the death 'in England of, his last remaining sister. Mr Astbury, who contested the Egmont seat at the last general election,'has unreservedly placed himself in the hands of the Liberal party in the electorate, states the Manaia "Witness, which proceeds in the following terms:—"lf selected by the 1 party, he announces his readiness "to again face the music at the ensuing general election. It is stated that Mr- Astbury is certain to be :: \ Selected." The death of Mr Bennet Burleigh, the celebrated war correspondent on the staff of the Daily Telegraph, is announced from London. Deceased had some remarkable experiences. He fought in the American war and was twice sentenced to death He was the Central News correspondent throughout the first Egyptian war, being present at the Tel-el-Kebir, and was a correspondent in the French campaign in Madagascar. , As the, Daily Telegraph's correspondent he accompanied the desert column from Korti to Metammah, }BB4, being present at Abu Klea and mentioned in despatches. He had further experiences with the Ashanti and Atbara Expeditions, in the Egyptian • war at Omdurman and the South. African war of 1899-1902. Dej eeased was a native of Glasgow.
