Christchurch, May 26
Alice Smith, aged 28, who was separated from her husband, committed suicide late last night. Tragic circumstances were disclosed at the inquest. She left a note saying that as the man she was living with was going to marry she coudn’t bear it. The verdict was suicide by poison. Dunedin, May 26.
William James Gilmore, caretaker of the Government buildings at Invercargill, died suddenly on board the Maitai on its arrival at Port Chalmers this morning. As he was suffering from chest trouble he had been ordered a milder climate, and was on his way to Wellington. Auckland, May 26.
The bursting of one of the retorts used for the refining of sulphur at White Island on May 18 resulted in the death of a certificated fireman, John Williams. The deceased, who was married, received severe burns and injuries, dying on the following day. Nelson, May 26.
A single man named Whitehouse, 45 years of age, living alone at Puponga, was found with his throat cut to-day.
