Mr Anthony Fiala, Mr Theodore Roosevelt’s companion, has arrived from Rio de Janeiro. Ho states that the expedition was sucked under when shooting the rapid* on the Papagaio river. The Natives swam ashore, but Mr Fiala had great difficulty in avoiding being drowned owing to the map board being strapped to bis wrists. However, lie managed to catch an overhanging limb of a tree. Mr Roosevelt did not accompany Mr Fiala on this occasion. THE PARTY SHORT OF FOOD. EX-PRESIDENT FEVER STRICKEN London, May 2, The Daily Telegraph states that the Roosevelt party was short of food in the Amazon basin. They lost fivo out of seven canoes in rapids and cataracts. , Roosevelt was very weak, and lived on eggs and tea for twenty-one days. The party was practically shut in a deep ravine for forty days, the cliffs on either hand being inaccessible. Progress through the jungle was at th» rate of half a kilometre daily. Roosevelt was stricken with f«r«r after quitting the ravine.
