Recently (states an Auckland P.A, wire this afternoon), a member of the crew of the pleasure yacht Rawene was lined £6 and costs for picking oysters of season. The Rawene was not seized by the Customs Department, as the owner, Gifford, undertook to hand the yacht over should the Department require him to do so. Later, Gifford was informed that the Minister for Customs had imposed a fine of fifty pounds upon the owner of the yacht as an alternative to the confiscation of the vessel. Gifford paid the fine. Local yachtsmen are reported to he moving in the matter of remission of the fine and Gifford will probably take action to test the legality of tne proceedings. A Wellington Press Association wire states that the general officer commanding has been notified by Colonel Collins that he approves of the following team to represent -New Zealand in the Empire rifle match to take place in Melbourne next November; Rifleman W. .Masefield, Rifleman H. Lnvcday, Lieutenant H, Simmonds, Rifleman .1. Milroy, Corporal Bent, Riflemen D. Mclntosh, J. Given and J, Cheeseman (highest aggregate scorers in flic final fifty before the belt was fired for), and Rifleman T. James, Corporal F. Ching, Rifleman A. Patrick, and Private L. Lovoday (selected bv the committee.) The team will leave early in October and take part in the New South Wales rifle meeting. The team will probably be in charge of Captain Doull, of Dunedin.
