STATE OFFICIALS INJURED. [By Electric Telegraph—-Copyright] [United Press Association.! Melbourne, March 16. Among the morning mails delivered to the Lands Department was a package addressed to a member of the Closer Settlement Board. When the package was opened a loud explosion occurred, resulting in injuries to Frederick Lee, Closer Settlement Commissioner, Thomas Hastie and Reginald Jones. The room was partly. wrecked, the window smashed, and the ceiling shattered bv brass bullets.

The explosive material is supposed to have been dynamite. It was operated by a hammer-spring and a percussion cap, and was contained in a small wooden box. The package was posted at Sydney, but no theory is advanced as to the cause of the outrage.
