TEACHERS' INSTITUTE.

A general meeting of the Taranaki institute was held on Saturday. Mr H. A. Stratford presided over a fair uottendanee of members. The confidential circular from, the \ r ew Zealand Educational Institute containing a suggested scale of salaries and recommendations concerning the proposed Council of Education was Considered and several amendments proposed thereto. Mr Stratford moved that as there is now a tentative scheme of salaries end grading for the Dominion, the matter of the local .scheme's minimum qualification be held aver.—Seconded by Mr Tcmpler and carried. Mr Dempsey moved that the executive of the New Zealand Educational Institute be requested to urge on the Minister of Education the de■irabijity of a Dominion system of grading for teachers.—Seconded by Mr Brown and carried. It was decided to inform the Education Board that the institute regrets that the Board has seen fit to advertise four grade 4 schools in papers outside Taranaki without advertising in the local papers, thus depriving Taranaki teachers of a chance of promotion. The secretary gave a short account of the proceedings of the recent conference in Auckland, and the institute recorded its appreciation of the kindness and hospitality of the Auckland District Institute and of Mr Milnes, m-inicpal of the Auckland Training College. As all future conferences are to be held in Wellington, the Board is to he asked to grant leave to one teacher as delegate to the forthcoming special conference in July next.
