ENGINEERS' EXECUTIVE ACQUITTED.

(Received 9.55 a.m.) Johannesburg, January 25

The Supreme Court has granted a rule nisi, returnable on the 28th inst., for the release of Mr Cresswell, M.P., on the ground that the magistrate wrongly claimed to administer martial law when there was no riot disturbance in Witwatersrand.

The magistrate acquitted the executive of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers on a charge of unlawful assembly, on the ground that the term "enclosed space" did not apply to rooms. When the Zulus saw the burghers leaving Middleburg for the Rand, emissaries were sent to Zuiuland to report that the time was opportune for revolt, as the Whites were warring against each other. The emissaries were arrested before reaching Zululand. The evidence shows that they intended to murder the only white remaining in the vicinity. The Government sent a large patrol to MidUeburg, warning the Zulus that on the first signs of violence, the offenders would be shot.
