DROWNED AT PONSONBY.

Auckland, January 126
John Ornstein, aged 21 years, was drowne.d at Ponsonby on Saturday afternoon. He was last seen at 3 o'clock sitting on a rock in his bathing Cress; later his friends were alarmed that he had not returned home, and the police were advised. In the meantime two young women found the body floating near the shore. They dragged it on to the beach and applied restorative measures, but though subsequently assisted by a doctor the efforts to restore life were futile. Deceased was a strong swimmer, and it is supposed that he was seized by a fit.
DIED IN THE HOSPITAL.
Wellington, January 24
A middle aged man, believed to be named George Henry, was picked up on the road at the Hutt yesterday suffering from fracture of the skull. He was admitted to the hospital and died early this morning. /
A CLOSE CALL.
Auckland, January 26,
Two fishermen and a party of 14 were fishing at Manukau Heads when one hooked a five feet shark, which capsized the dinghy being towed behind the launch. Three of the occupants of the dinghy were thrown into the water. A Maori was pulled aboard the launch, and the second man helped aboard «witb the aid of a fishing line. The third man was fully clothed and Avas carried away by a big current. One of the fishermen jumped from the launch with a life buoy and found that the man had disappeared, but diving recovered him. The man was got aboard unconscious, but life was restored by artificial respiration.
A FISHING FATALITY.
Dunedin, January 24
Whilst.- walking along the beach near Harrington Point at 0 a.m. on Saturday, Mr Cross, manager of the local creamery, discovered ft body that had been washed ashore. The remains were subsequently identified as those of the late Thomas Shanks, a resident of Ravensbourne, who was accidentally drowned, along with a companion, on December 29, through the swamping iot' a dinghy near Harrington Point. At the inquest, a verdict was returned "That deceased was accidentally drowned through the swamping of a boat while fishing."
MOTOR CYCLIST INJURED.
Auckland, January 21
I An elderly man, named Hawkins, 'was riding a motor cycle on the Great North Road, near the Morningside railway station, when his machine collided with two dogs. The rider was thrown heavily and received severe injuries. Ho was removed to the hospital in an unconscious condition.
