SENT TO RiPA ISLAND.

Three young men were to-day committed to llipa Island, for periods ranging from one to three weeks,, for failing, to render personal service under the Defence Act.

CHARGE OF ARSON.

Timaru, January 14

James Mitchell was yesterday charged at the Geraldine Magistrate's Court ivith setting lire to an empty house at Geraldine, the property of Mrs Scbultz, of; Christchurch. The evidence showed that accused contemplated the act previously, and had stated lie was to get £2O for doing so. This le denied in evidence, but pleaded guilty, and was committed for trial.

A PLUCKY DETECTIVE.

Christchureh, January 14

A sensational affair is reported to have occurred in Coker's Hotel, Manchester street, this morning. Late ast night, or in the early hours of this morning, the saddlery establishment of Triggs and Denton, in Manchester Street South, was broken into, md some gold and bronze medals abstracted from a case. Detective Regan proceeded, to Coker's Hotel at about .'leven o'clock this morning, and went up to a man in the main entrance. As the detective approached the man, it is alleged, tho man's riarid went to his 'lip-pocket, and, fearing trouble, the detective grappled with him. Thereupon a violent struggle ensued, the two contestants fighting and grappling with each other in the main entrance 'mil, in the side passage, and in the bar. Detective O'Connor made his appearance on the scene, and the two officers had the* man handcuffed and "•onveyed to the police station, where •ie was searched, and in his hip-pocket was found a seven chambered revolver, fully loaded, whilst a box of cartridges vere also discovered in his possession. It is stated that there were also found m him some of the missing articles from the shop.

A STRIKE INCIDENT.

Auckland, January 14

At the Police Court to-day, the magistrate heard a charge of assault irising out of the- incident on the .Maheno, when Charles Thomas Reeves, who is prominent in "1.W.W." circles, and a constant speaker during the progress of the recent strike, was ibjeeted to as a steerage passenger lon the vessel and forcibly ejected. The defendant was T. R. Brookes, and the assault complained of consisted of seizing complainant by the arm and pushing him off the steamer. Mr Mahoney ippeared for Reeves. Reeves was severely cross-examined and the Court decided there was insufficient evidence of assault, and dismissed the case.
