THE VOLCANO'S UPHEAVAL
DETAILS OF THE ERUPTION.

Tokio, January 14
The eruption of- Sakurashima commenced with enormous columns of smoka bursting forth at several paints. Forty minutes later the eruption took piace at the summit. The houses oh the east side of Saku•ashiina were the first to take fire. The surviving inhabitants thronged the beach, and the police commandeered lighters to take the refugees. The heat was intense, and the sky was darkened by smoke. As seen from the mainland, the island was a magnificent spectacle. It. appeared enveloped in Hames, the brilliance of which was constantly enhanced by eruptions from the crater. Meanwhile, 70,00') Kagoshima people believed their homes were about to share the fate of tho island. Hundreds of houses, were destroyed, the inhabitants being killed or injured. Kagoshima was shaken by an earthquake every three or five minutes, 200 being registered on Sunday.
Asama is also active, and Kirishima, 30 miles north of Kagoshima, is also causing devastation. There are seismic disturbances throughout the Kyushija province.
Ngasaki, 100 miles away, is covered with volcanic ash. TiDAL WAVE ADDS TO THE HORRORS. Tokio, January 13. A tidal wave added to the horrors resulting from the eruption at Kagoshima, where a multitude crowded the beach. KAGOSHIMA AND OTHER TOWNS IN RUINS. (Received 9.25 a.m.) Tokio, January 14. . Warships which have arrived from Kagoshima report that the town has been practically destroyed by e eruption, as also were the villages and towns in the neighbourhood.
