FIRE.
W BIG BLAZE IN PETONE.
[Pebßkesb Association.]. Wellington, January 14
' A big blaze at Tepuui Street, Petone, early "this morning resulted in the total destruction of an old wooden building used by George Cook as.a cooperage and box making factory. As tiiis is the busy season, there was a specially large stock on baud, and the material being very dry, burnt rapidly. The flames were fanned by a strong wind, which, however, prevented the fire spreading to the huge timber stacks. The brigade's efforts were confined to saving the adjoining houses. The water pressure was poor, but excellent work was done.
Two rows of houses owned by the Gear Meat Co. were seriously threatened, but only one caught, and the outbreak was extinguished.
- The damage at the factory is estimated at £'3ooo, which is partly covered by insurance, £IBOO being on the building and machinery iu the Alliance and Phoenix offices. Tht stock was insured for £4OO in the Commercial office.
