r HOSPITAL NURSE'S DEATH.

It was reported at a meeting of the hospital committee that on December 20th a lad was admitted suffering from a virulent affection of the thoat. Three nurses contracted the disease, which terminated fatally in the case of Nurse Keyworth, 21 years o fage, who was in 'her third year of training. Another nurse is making slow recovery, and the third is convalescent. The Medical Superintendent stated that the occurrence was one of those unfortunate happenings found to occur at times, despite every reasonable precautions taken.

Robert Somerville, chemist, on four Charges under the Opium Act, including failing to make entry of the purchase of slbs 12ozs opium, and failing to take stock and balance hi* onium-book, was lined £25 and costs.
SOUTHLAND BUSH FIRES.
Invercargill, January 14
Bush fires resulted in serious damage to various parts in Southland on Tuesday. Kilkelly Bros.' sawmill at Sparbush, including the plant and men's huts, was destroyed. Mclntyre's sawmill and shale work buildings at Orepuki were also destroyed, and'two residences and other buildings and crops suffered.
