LIGHT FOR THE COUNTY.
ATTITUDE OF THE BOROUGH. £ BOROUGH DESIRES AMITY. A Well discussed matter is the license sought by the Stratford Electrical Supply Co; to supply electric current throughout Stratford County. The interests of the Borough and the County conflict to-a degree on the matter, and it was only natural that some reference should be made to it at last night’s meeting of the Borough Council. 1 5 Cr.’ Richards said the County Council had passed a resolution urging the Government to grant the license; but he was hot quite sure that Countv Councillors knew 'exactly what the issuing of the license actually meant. If the license were issued it would mean that the company would be empowered to carry on business for forty years' not only in the County, but in the Borough also. He moved that thy Council object to the license in its present form. The Council had never urged the Government not to giant the Company power to run their County lines through the Borough—so far the Borough had not poked its nose into the County pie any more than was absolutely necessary. Cr. Fredric seconded. He said that nobody in Stratford Borough wanted to interfere with the County Council lighting scheme, but the Borough Council could not allow the County Council to act over their heads. Crs. King and Masters argued in the direction that the Council in opposing the issue of the present license were opposing the provision of a lighting scheme in the County. The Mayor said that as one of the deputation which interviewed the Government he could say that no representations were made against the County scheme except where the interests of the Borough were endangered. Cr. Boon said it should be made clear to the County that the Borough had no desire to interfere with the County’s objects, but must conserve its own rights. Cr. Richards altered his motion to read that the Borough place on record its protest against the issue of the license in its present form, and this was carried.
It was also decided that the Mayor and Cr. Richards wait on the County Council and discuss the matter with them. The Mayor said there was no room for an acrimonious debate at that table and no necessity for cross words with the County; and if the. Borough depu tation waited on the County Council the deputation could make clear the position of the Borough.
