The Minister of Justice, referring to the New Zealand Seamen's Union protest in connection with the Devon's ■eameii, pointed out that three out of four were undergoing punishment for refusing duty in addition to "a breach of the ship's articles in declining vaccination. The agents of the steamer Devon •xplain that .when the vessel was in England a special agreement was made between the master and each individual member of the crew embodied on the ship's articles that they ■hould be vaccinated if required. When the time came for vaccination only four refused. .The master endeavoured to discharge them, but the Government shipping master declined the discharge on the ground that they refused vaccination, and that the regu- , lationa prohibited the steamer obtain- j ing a clearance until all the crew and , "passengers Were successfully vac- j cinated;, consequently four unvaccin- j ated men 1 aboard meant an indefinite , delay. There was no option, there- j fore, bixt for the mast'er to prosecute them for refusing to carry out the < agreement. They WeJI prosecuted under the Merchant Shipping Act for refusing vaccination, and also, in the case of three of them, for absenting themselves withotft "leave*. I "' ■ ' ■ ' The district health officer at Auckland reports that no fresh cases were reported in Auckland City or suburbs. Two fresh cases were reported at Kaikohe on Saturday, and five fresh cases were admitted to the Kaikohe isolation hospital on Saturday (reported to-day). One case is reported from Kaponga (near Waikato Heads), and one from Oruaru, in the Hbosori oountry. The goneral. news from the Waikato district is good.
