GAMBLER SENTENCED. Accused contracted gambling debts .and stole articles of jewelI lery and pawned the to pay his liabilities. In passing sentence, His Honor said it was to be regret- | ted that gambling was legalised by the Government. Prisoner, no doubt, thought he was quite right in gambling when it was sanctioned by the 'legislature. >
I'" AUCKLAN D SESSIONS. | Auckland, August 18. .Judge Cooper, in his charge to the Grand Jury at the opening of the !criminal sessions, said lie regretted the amount of serious crime disclosed 'in the indictments. He added: "lint it is not reasonable to suppose that j Auckland is the "most criminal city in New Zealand. The province covered a very large area, and was populated with more of the casual class [of population. It was closely in [touch with Australia and America, /criminals from other countries landling here." The list includes two j charges of murder, one at Henderson, land the other at Warkworth. Regardling the Henderson tragedy, His Honor [said the jury should return a true bill, j leaving the onus of proof of the defence of unsound mind upon the prisoner.
