EXPLOSION IN A LOCO.
r REMARKABLE ACCIDENT. |[Lt BiiECxmo Telegraph—{United Press Association.j Lithgow, July 23. A remarkable accident occurred about a mile and a halt on the Sydney side of Bell railway station. In an engine of .a goods train, when Fireman leaves attempted to open the firebox door to replenish the lire with coal, a loud explosion occurred, and at the same instant a big volume of steam came out of the firebox. Driver Leary and the fireman were both , blown clean out of the engine cabin on to the ground. The fireman was the first to recover his senses, and ran after the train, which was travelling very slowly, owing to the rising grade and loss, of steam. Ho succeeded in stopping tile train by disconnecting the air brakes. The driver fell down Ithe embankment when blown out *of t)ie cabin, ■and upon reaching the permanent way, jafter much difficulty, he asked Guard Messer wqfujd Avalk 'to, Bell and report* the matter. Messer walked to the station, and. instructions yvere issued for an engine to be Gent! from Eskbarik to haul the disabled tengine and trkiil to- Eskbank. Thelcause of the explosion s Was the buriltiig of a steam pipe in, the smokebox. Both engine men were considerably bruised, and suffered from shock. Fireman Neaves was badly scalded on the right leg, and was admitted to the "Lithgow hospitoh > -u
