AMUSING COURT SCENE .
Volubility, persuasiveness, and flat tery weye jrtin&icd in the fomarks made at Marylobone Police Court on June 6 by ah Irishwoman named Margaret Romayne, who was charged with the, th&ft of a fowl aiid three eggs from Messrs Sainsbury’s shop, in High road, Kilburn. “This woman refuses her name!” said Assistant-gaoler Summers, as he led Mrs Romayno into the dock.' “What is your name?” inquired,Mi Plow don.
“Oi’ll tell yez,” she replied in a rich Irish accent, •“I am sure you will,” said Mr Plowden.
“Yes, and Oi’m pleased to see yez, sir,” continued the woman. “Oi’ve been reading all about yez when you were abroad.” Mr Plowden: But you haven’t told me your name yet. “Ah! me name is Margaret Romayne,” was the reply; “and Oi’m pleased to see yez looking so foine. I know all about yez, and yer favorite position is wid yer legs up in the air.” (Laughter.) “Steal a fowl! Why, Oi’ve two daughters on the stage, one of whom alono could buy 50,000 fowls.” A constable was then called to give evidence. “Ah, here ho comes to rake it/ al up agen me,” she said, “Bilt never moind. Oi’ve a just man to deal wid me, God Bless him. Oi don’t fear anything now', .because Oi’vo" a just Judge.” The accused urged that she meant tc pay for the things, but took some “Irish,” which made her make a fool of herself. Mr Plowden : Ah ! you see what drink brings you to. “Oi do indado,” said Mrs Ilomayne, “and Oi wish Oi was at home in my sitting room reading your book.” Mr Plowden: Well, [ will give you ono chanco. “God bless you,” said the accused. .“Oi’ll go home and read all about yez. Oi’ll never come ‘ hero any more, and Oi’ll sign the pledge.” “Ah,” said Mr Plowden, “I wish you would.” The old woman'deft the'court heaping bleslngs on the Magistrate.
