THE DEFENCE ACT.

HUNGER STRIKE AT THE DETENTION CAMP. ACT ALLEGEDLY OVER-RIDDEN. [Per Press Association.] Christchurch, July 2. It is stated that the lads at the military detention camp, Ripa Island, have declined to drill and several have started hunger striking. The Peace Council telegraphed to the Minister of Defence: “Informed that the boys on Ripa Island are put in close confinement for insubordination and on short rations. This punishment is illegal, as the Act provided for a further period of detention only. By whose authority is the Act over-ridden?”
