BURNED TO DEATH,

[Peii Press Association.] Dunedin, June 16

John Gallagher/ 72 years of" age, was burned to death in his hut at St. Bathans at 11 p.m. on Saturday. It is believed that the accident occurred through a lighted candle upsetting while deceased was reading.

AN OLD MAN'S DEATH

Auckland, June 16.

Yesterday morning the body of an Robert Latimer, was discovered at his old resident of Pukekohe, named home on Pukekohe Hill, by some visitors, to the house. Mr Latimer was a bachelor, and lived by himself. He was last seen in Pukekohe early in the week, and when the body was discovered yesterday it was evident that death had taken place a day or two previously. Deceased was found in hh night clothe's lying on the floor alongside his bed; " As' deceased had been undergoing medical treatmnt an inequst was not'considered necessary. The late Mr Latimer was a man of means, and had lived hr the district for ahout 40 years. '■•''■'■•

A SHUNTING ACCIDENT,

Dunedin, June 17

When a railway porter named L. Jeffery was" assisting in shunting operations at Lawrence, at about midday to-day, lie was caught between a waggon and the loading stake at the cattle yards. The extent of his injuries is not yet known, but they are regarded as somewhat, serious.

DEATH FROM DROWNING

Wanganui, June 17

An inquest was held this afternoon into the circumstances surrounding the death of Sarah Billinghurst, a widow, aged 67* .whose body was found in the river. Deceased, who acted as housekeeper, had been missing since June 3. She was not of strict temperance habits, and she had just collected her old age pension. There was no evidence to show how she got into the river, and a verdict was returned accordingly.

A SCHOOLGIRL BURNED

Auckland, June 17

A schoolgirl named May O'Buglein was admitted to the hospital tonight suffering from severe burns about the body. The girl went outside the house with a candle which set alight to her clothing. Her cries for help were heard, and the flames were extinguished. After medical attention she was sent to the hospital. Her condition is regarded as serious.

MOTOR CYCLE ACCIDENT. Mr V. G. Stapleton, of Hawera, while riding to New Plymouth on his motor-cycle from Hawera, yesterday, ran into the Mangaoraka bridge, and severely fractured his knee/ He was brought in to the New Plymouth Hospital.
