NORTH (11) v. SOUTH (0). The North v. South match was played on the Recreation Ground, New Plymouth yesterday. There was an excellent attendance. The teams were as selected with the exceptions Rolands and Johnson replaced Tamu and Pini, and Mculi replaced Roberts in the South team, while Steele and Davidson played for North, in place of Ha wkins and Dewar. The game was not a brilliant one by any means, not being nearly open enough until towards the end of the second spell. At the opening the Southern men appeared to advantage, and it appeared as if they would repeat last year’s performance, but in a very little time it was seen that the Northerners could hold their own, and would probably win the game. After some patchy play, Cade scored, and Stohr added the major points by an eyelash, the leather just striking the bar and falling behind the posts. With 5 points against them the South set to work vigorously in the second spell, and some nice passing rushes were set going. The North, however, still had the best of it, and Brown breaking through a scrum sent the ball to Nicholls who just got over. Loveridge took the kick, but did not succeed. Some lively play followed, and South narrowly escaped scoring on more than one occasion. Towards the close, after play had been confined to North’s line for some time, a fine forward rush relieved the position, and the game shifted to the other end. Carey put in a great dash, and Bertrand, who was waiting his chance, was able to score. Stohr’s kick failed, and the game ended: North 11 points; South, nil. Mr Radi was referee.
Yesterday the S.D.H.S. boys played Star 111., at New Plymouth racecourse. After a good game, Stratford proved victorious by 6 to nil. Black and Coutts scored tries, neither of which was converted. Both tries were secured as the result of fast following up. Mr R. Thomas kindly acted as referee. . f
