DOCTOR FOR THE EAST.

A REPRESENTATION TO THE GOVERNMENT. BY THE ACTING-CORONER. Last week a child named Ellis, whose father is employed on the railway works at Koliuratahi, died while being brought by train to Stratford for medical attention. After healing the medical evidence at the inquest, the jury found that death resulted from natural causes, adding a rider urging the Government to arrange for a medical man taking up his residence at Whangamomona. This rider has now been Communicated to the Prime Minister by Mr C. D. Sole, ActingCoroner, in the following letter: — Hon. W. F. Massey, Prime Minister, Wellington. Sir, —Touching the death of a child recently at Stratford from Whangamomona, I was directed by the jury to bring under your npticg the following rider: “That the Government’s attention be drawn to the fact that a medical man should be sent to the Whangamomona District without delay.” I was given to understand that a deputation waited on you some time ago. at Whangamomona, when you expressed great surprise ’at the fact that there was ho medical man, ariff said when you had the opportunity, you would see to it. I take it the opportunity-has arrived, and trust you hull give this qiiestfonj your serious consideration. I quite understand the difficulties of your position, and might suggest that if, say, the sum of 3d in the pound was deducted from the State employees’ wages and a similar levy of 6d a week from the settlers, and with a small State subsidy, it ought to work out alright;) afld a gbbd) doctor * procurable. You might be able to evolve a better plan, but, anyhow, something should .||f: jjJope.-fJ. remain, your obedient servant, C. D. SOLE, J.P., Acting-coroner.
