POLICY ** THE PACIFIC. NEW ZEALAND AND AUSTIN ALIA. [By Electric Telegraph—Copyright] [United Press Association.] (Received 11 a.m.)
Sydney, June o
Referring to the defence of the Pacific, the Herald says: “If the recommendation Mr Allen brought bach from the conference with the British Government is that New Zealand is to create her own naval force in the Pacific, we can assure him he need not fear an attempt will be made by Australia to obtain control. The adoption by New Zealand of the policy ol maintaining her own shins —even if it be in the first instance, only a flotilla of destroyers, and submarines—is too important in the interests o. both countries, and Canada and the Empire also, for Australians to jeopardise it by vain talk of,Commonwealth predominance of control. Doubtless, from ordinary considerations of prudence and business, there must bo co-operation, and probably close intimate co-operation with New Zealand and the Australian units of the Commonwealth which will certainly give New Zealand every asistance in its power. If we enter into arrangements regarding co-operation, wo enter as equals. If Canada does not join the scheme, there is all the more need for the closest co-operation between Australia and New Zealand.” ,
