FIRE ON THE MAKURA.
MAILS DESTROYED

Wellington, April 9
The Secretary of the Post Office has received the following; telegram from the Union Company, Dunedin :—"Referring to our telegram of yesterday, Sydney has just cabled us that a further message has been received received from the captain of the Makura at eight o'clock last night, some 210 miles from Sydney, as follows: "We are in very heavy weather. Fifty bags of Xew Zealand mails have been damaged by fire and water, some being totally destroyed."
