CONSPIRACY TO BECOME SULTAN
The Porte has ordered detectives to .surround Prince Wahid Eddin's palace, and has forbidden the Prince to leave, alleging that he is conspiring to become Sultan. Two hundred and fifty officers and people implicated in the conspiracy have been arrested. The ferment in the army is growing, and Enver Bey's life has been threatened. ENVER BEY OF TURKEY. "The most romantic figure of contemporary history comes from the land of Aladdin, Sindbad, and Ali Baba," says the New York Nation. "The career of Enver Bey is romantic, not after the modern habit we have of speaking of the romance of science, of bridge-building, and of the glucose products. It is romance of the old-fashioned, heart-thrilling kind, in which youth slays monsters and is rewarded with the hands of beautiful princesses, and dons secret disguises and rides into the face of death on a white charger, and wins the cheering adoration of the multitude.
"To lead a handful of mutineer* against the palace of the Ministers, and, pistol in band, to secure the resignation of a Cabinet and the possible reversal of a policy that may affect the welfare of two continents—for a parallel to this scene one must almost go back to Paris and the early days of one Bounaparte."
