“REAL MACKAY.”

THE PREMIER’S CHOICE

In the course of his remarks at

the dinner, to the Premier in Hawera on Saturday evening, Mr Walter Powdrell got off a rather good joke at the expense of the Premier and some of his fellow travellers during last week’s tour. When the manufacture of whey-butter was commenced the Agricultural Department “sat on” the project rather heavily by requiring that it should not bo exported unless branded “as sich,” and this the companies thought would not be giving the article “a square , deal.” They sent a deputation to Wellington, and after a good deal of trouble got a modification of the requirements, so that, the butter is now sent away as New Zealand dairy butter; but it does not bear on it the coveted “pure creamery.” Now, when the Premier and Ids' friends visited Kaupokonnui the other day, specimens of butter were put before them. This was the

“real Mackay” in the shape of “pure creamery,” made in this instance especially good, from selected cream ; there was also some of the whoy-hut-ter. It was all neatly laid out, and the party were invited to smell and taste and handle and then pick out

“the pure creamery.” Mr Powdrell declared amid laughter, that the Premieres choice happened on pats which, when turned over for identification, proved to he branded whey-butter. Mr Massey laughed very heartily, tut did not deny the impeachment, and Mr Powdrell went on to say that the makers of the butter now seriously think of putting it on the market foi the future with an attractive label bearing a suitable illustration, and among other recommendations the legend “The Premier’s choice.”—Star.
