PEA-RIFLE AFFRAY.
RESULT OF BOYS’ QUARREL, Several boys went out beyond Paraliaki towards Wareora yesterday, among them being Edward Sheehan, aged years, son of an employee* at the gasworks, and George Fyffe, irged 12 years, who resides with his parents at Kiripaka. Sheehan is now in the custody of the police on a serious charge, and Fyffe is an luma to of the hospital, and is so ill that his life is despaired of. Sheehan appeared at the Police Court this morning, charged with wounding Fyffe. Sergeant Moore stated that while a party of boys were playing yesterday, young Fiffe threw something at Sheehan, who lifted a pea-rifle and said, “I’ll put a hole through you!” Fyffe jumped behind a tree, and the other boys endeavoured to take the weapon from Sheehan’s hands. Fyffe, imagining apparently that the other had been disarmed, reappeared, and Sheehan, levelling the rifle, fired directly at him. The boy fell badly injured, and the circumstances being' reported ofc the police, young Sheehan was arrested. Fyffe was meanwhile taken to the hospital, and his condition being very grave, his depositions were taken in the presence of the police and Sheehan. Accused was remanded.
This afternoon, the hospital authorities reported that the boy was in a very ,low condition.
