RECIPROCITY.
NEW ZEALAND’S CLAIMS ON SENTIMENT AND PROPINQUITY. (Received 12.40 p.m.) Sydney, April 4. The Herald, commenting on reciprocity says: “It is a little unfortunate that tho conference will be held during the Federal election campaign, as that would inevitably make the deliberations of the conference loom less large in the public eye than their importance warrants. This is a pity, for if Australia aspires to be a nation in fact as well as in name we should give more thought to external relations. Our commercial relations with New Zealand are anomalous. We allow Britain preference on certain imports, while we confront New Zealand with the same tariff wall as Germany and, Japan. As far as sentiment is concerned, New Zealand has equal claims with Britain, and as far as propinquity goes she has a greater claim;.” The Herald points out the advantages of reciprocity in certain products, and urges the importance and necessity of reciprocal action in defence matters. ■■
