GYMNASTICS.

CLUB FORMED IN STRATFORD. A Gymnastic Club was successfully formed in Stratford last night, the inaugural meeting being attended by twenty enthusiasts, over whom Captain Dampen presided. A strong committee was formed, and Messrs W. A. Sparwath (a Danish athlete), Murray Urquhart (the well-known wrestler), Alan Maxwell (Taranaki’s “white hope”), and Sergeant-Major McGlade (a jui-jitsu expert) were appointed honorary instructors. The new Club has received many offers of assistance, notably from its instrucors, and it is hoped to have a satisfactory finance, while keeping subscriptions as low as possible. Negotiations are in progress for the lease of. the old Masonic Hall, and it is probable that the Stratford Football Club, the Territorials, and the Senior Cadets, will also have the use of the hall and the new Club’s plant, provided a suitable agreement can bo made with the Gymnastic Club. That the club is much, needed in j Stratford is an undisputed fact, hut! I there are not wanting those citizens 1 who consider that the latest sporting j body will follow its many predecessors 1 into the limbo of forgotten things. The meeting last night was determined that this should not be the ' case. The joint secretaries arc Messrs H. L. Spratt and K. Munro. Other ollicers of the club are: Pati:i ron, Mr J. B. Mine, M.P.; president, Mr W. P. Kirkwood; vice-presidents, Captain Dampen, Dr. Carbery, and Messrs W. G. Malone, and W. J. j Craws haw ; bon. surgeon, Dr. Paget; I committee, Messrs C. H. Crokcr. W. ' J J i. Abraham, V. Crawshaw, F. Hale, and F. Clousten ; bon. treasurer, Mr i >j. : W. Jennings; hon. auditor, Mr ■I A. D. Jones.
