GALE AT THE ISLANDS.
GENERAL DEVASTATION. \By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (United Press Association.) Suva, March 18. Yesterday barometrical readings dedicated a climatic disturbance. This morning at 5 o’clock the glass fell steadily. At seven the Government signal guns boomed a warning of an approaching hurricane. At nine a gale was blowing with full force, finally dying away at 11 o’clock. The soap works were totally destroyed, and the,Union Company’s unfinished hotel was damaged to the extent of £SOO. Other local damage was light. Communication with other centres is interrupted. The Rewa Valley sugar-cane and banana crops were devastated for miles. The Labasa ana i'avium are safe, and the Tofua rode the gale in the harbour. The Maraina, having sheltered, reached port safely. The Tofjuq, has left for Auckland, and, the Manama for Vancouver.
