A WOMAN’S INFATUATION

A Woman known as May Russell admitted'having attempted suicide. It? was stated that she was a married woman named Jones. She followed a cowboy belonging to a circus, from Nelson and put up at the hotel, where the circus employees were staying. The man whom she was? infatuated with avoided her. She was found unconscious in a passage and was removed to the hospital. She liadi a- return ticket to Nelson and im court expressed the desire to return to her children which had been left in the care of a friend. She was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon.

The journalists’ dispute before the ’Conciliation Council )jas not been concluded. It will be resumed to-mor-row afternoon. FEMALE IMMIGRATION
Wellington,, March 18,
In consequence of the outspoken evidence she gave before the Dominion’s Commission on the subject of female immigration, the officer in charge of the women’s branch of the Labour Department in Wellington has been forbidden, by the Government to go on board incoming liners in future. For years past she has regularly met the Home boats in company with male officers of the Department and has given much information and assistance to women among the immigrants.
i COST OF HARBOUR BOARD
Wellington, March 18
Mr Fletcher, Chairman of the Harbour Board, voiced a complaint against the cumbersome nature and cost of the annual election system. Mr Nicholls, secretary of the Board, states in his annual report that the nett cost of the last election was £I3OO, and that it is very urgent that the matter should bo dealt with by Parliament, in order that the elections bo conducted more economically than it is possible at present.
