Napier, March 10.

At the Supreme Court to-day Michael Johnston, a half-caste native, was found guilty of attempted carnal knowledge of a native girl, aged 13 years, with a recommendation to mercy on account of his youth and previous good character. Sentence was deferred. A native lad pleaded guilty to having forged a .cheque for £3 and uttered the same at Hastings, and was admitted to twelve months’ probation. Mary Kathleen Doran was found not guilty of concealment of birth at Hastings.

LIQUOR ADVERTISEMENTS. Invercargill, March 10. Members of the executive of the W.C.T.U. have instituted a campaign against liquor advertisements on tram tickets. They threaten to boycott the electric trams, and are asking' members of temperance organisations to refuse to accept tickets bearing liquor advertisements. The Union is also agitating against Sunday trams and intends to oppose candidates for the Town Council who will not support their views on these matters. '* "■ •

FERRY PUNT BREAKS AWAY. Invercargill, March 10. . The passengers, ten in number, who set off from the west side of the Waiau river, in the ferry punt on Saturday at 6.30 p.ra. for Tutapere an unexpected and eicciting experience. When about half-way across the river, which was running high, a hook on the ; Wire rdpe' liroke and the passengers were carried down ; the river towards the mouth at a | rapid rate. What the consequehces would be were not apparent [.at \ the outset, and serious results were | apprehended, until the punt yvas found ; to be making for the Papatotara-, side, where it went ashore about 100 ( yards from the place at which it was t released from its fastenings. Rev.' Mr McEwan was struck on the heafl, by the wire rope, receiving a nasty cut which had to be stitched by Dr. Stuart, of Otautau.
