MASTERTON RAM I'A\R. (Per Press Association.) Masterton, February 20. The annual ram fair under the auspices of the Masterton A. and P. Association was opened hero to-day. There was a largo arc! representative attendance of buyers, including some from the south. Soutbdowns sold up to 22$ guineas for studs, and 7| guineas for flocks. Stud Lincolns sold up to 33 guineas, and flocks up to 8 guineas. SUNDAY TRAMS. Invercargill, February 20. The tram service in Invercargill, which is owned by the municipality, has not been working on Sundays hitherto, but tho Council to-night decided to give Sunday trams a terec months’ trial, starting on the first Sunday in March . POLICE FORCE PROMOTIONS. Wellington, February 20. The following police constables have been promoted to tho rank of sergeant, subject to their passing the medical test, and will be transferred to the stations named:—Donald McKenzie, of Lower Hutt, to Dunedin; Andrew McDonnell, of Arataou, to Newton (Auckland); L. E. O’Halloran, of Woodville, to Wellington; id. R. Taylor, of Palmerston North, to Dunedin; P. Cassidy, of Rakaia, to Christchurch; and J. A. Matthovs, of To Kuiti, to Auckland. Commissioner Cullen says that these pro notions, which are out of regard for efficiency and long service, are the last under the old gystem. After March 1 police officers will qualify by examination for advancement in rank.

BURGLARY. Auckland, February 19. Mr R. McCaulfield’s liouse in Mill Road, Pareroa, was entered by some person last night, and £l2 in nites stolen from under a mattress on McCaulfield’s bed. McCaulfield left the house at 8.30; all the doors were then locked and the lights out. On return jug about an hour later ho found all the doors open and a big light burning in the kitchen. The bedroom was disarranged, and the blankets were found under a water-tap outside the house. Papers were scattered about the room, but the money was missing. GIRLS’ COLLEGE AT HAVELOCK. IMMEDIATE ACTION NECESSARY Danneyirke, February 21. The Rev. A. Grant, bon. secretary of the committee, is endeavouring to raigse funds for founding a girls’ college at Havelock North, under the auspices of the Presbyterian Church. Ho has addressed a circular letter to all the Presbyterian ministers appealing for support in the proposal. Between £2OOO and £3OO have already been secured, but unless another £2OOO is immediately forthcoming the success of the proposal will be endangered. Miss Fraser, principalelect, who offered her services gratis, must be informed in March whether the building is to be proceeded with for the opening in February of next year, otherwise she will withdraw her services, u;hile the site for the college was presented by Mr H, M. Campbell, M.P., on condition that the college is built within a year.

ATTEMPTED DOPING. Blenheim, February 19. A sensation was caused at Blenheim this morning early by the discovery that Mr M. Hollard’s trotter, Lucy Wallace, engaged at the Dashwood meeting, had been tampered with, the object being to dope her. The act was perpetrated during the night. Corrosive liquid was used, but only with partial success. The horse’s mouth and nose were burned. She was nevertheless taken to the course, and was successful in winning the principal event.
