DOMESTIC INFELICITY. (Per Press Association.) Levin, January 23. At the Levin S.M. Court to-day, John Harrox Whellan appeared, charged with shooting at JoJm Wilkinson with intent to do bodily harm. The police statement showed that the ciiarges arose out of domestic infelicity. Wilkinson arrived at Lev;n on Monday night, ostensibly to see the agricultural and pastoral show next Wednesday. Whellan tracked him to Whellan’s house, and found him in a bedroom. Wilkinson ran out, and Whellan fired twice at him with a revolver, but did not hit him. Whellan’s counsel submitted that Whellan had no intent to do more thsp frighten Wilkinson, over whom he had had previous marital disagreements. Interrogated by the Bench, Wilkinson said that ho had no fear of Whellan repeating the offence. Mr. Blenkhorn, who was counsel for Whellan, siihmitted that Ids client was in the worse physical condition cf the two, and it was obvious that be had no intent to do actual bodily harm, and it was the false outcry by Wilkinson that he had been shot that had caused Whellan’s mental distress and caused him to alarm the neighbourhood. Detective Lewis, who appeared for the police, objected to the proposal to have accused admitted to bail purely on his own recognisances, but the Bench, Messrs. Gardener and Remington, LIVs, eventually took this coiuse, n being pointed out that accused, comparatively a recent arrival in Levin, might have difficulty in obtaining outside bail. The case was remanded to February 3, on accused’s own recognisance of £SO, conditional on his reporting himself daily to the police. BOOKMAKERS FINED. Christchurch, January 28. In the Magistrate’s Court this afternoon George Roper was charged that “on January 21st on certain licensed premises (Rothcrfield Hotel) being a bookmaker, he did bet on the result of a horse race to be hold in Wellington.” Roper was also charged with betting on licensed premises (t,he Zetland Hotel). Af.er hearing tin evidence his Worship said he would convict inflicting a fine of £4O. The second charge was withdrawn. Archibald Hunt, charged that at Christchurch, on January 22, he did keep a common gaming house in Chancery Lane, was convicted, and fined £20." ERUPTION AT WATMANGU. Rotorua, January 28.
