UNIVERSITY SENATE.

Auckland,’ January 28. The University Senate resolved that the subject for the Mapmillan-Brown prize in 1914 be “The Conquest of the Air.” that the following changes referring to entrance scholarships take effect at the December examination in 1914; maximum marks for geography 400 instead'of 425; maximum marks in all subjects presented to any candidate not to exceed 6050, instead of 6200 as formerly; that at the December examination in 1915 the subject “Sound and Light” and “Elementary Mechanics of Solids” be removed from the list of subjects, and Home Science added. IMPRISONMENT FOR FRAUD. • -Invercargill, January 28. A peculiar case came before the Court to-day. In May last a house was destroyed by fire, and the occupier, James Philiipson, recovered the insurance on the goods returned as burnt. It was recently discovered that some of the property was not destroyed, and Philiipson was charged with the theft of a violin, and .with obtaining £2O from the New Zealand Insurance Company by fraud. He was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. The Magistrate remarked that it was a most serious matter, and probably this class of offence was rather common, though it was difficult to detect.
