COMMONWEALTH CABLES.
(Received 9.35 a.m.) Sydney, January 24. The death sentence on Roberts for wounding a man named Parkes with intent to murder, has been commuted to imprisonment for life. The Colliery Employees’ Federation disclaims all responsibility over the Burwood trouble, and asks the mine owners for an unconditional conference. The miners at Burwood decided to appeal to other miners to support the effort to force the wheelers at Burwood to abandon their present attitude, which is blocking the holding of a conference. Miners propose doing the wheeling themselves. The proposed federation of the Clerks’ Union with the Shop Assistants and Warehouse Employees* Association would include 36,000 members. The stallion Ayr Laddie is dead. The incomplete election returns for Tasmania show that the Liberals have--26, Labour 23, and the Independents one seat. Received 12.5 p.m.) Incomplete returns: Liberals 16, Labour 14.
