SUNDRY SPORTS.

CRICKET. SOUTH MELBOURNE v. WELLINGTON. (Per Press Association.) Wellington, January 23. The South Melbourne cricket team concluded the final match of the tour, against the Wellington Wednesday team,- to-day. Wellington resumed batting, their second innings totalling 92 (Blamires 37, and Wilson 15, being the only double-figure scorers, despite the excellent wicket). Gillier was mainly responsible for their failure, securing four wickets for 24 runs, Kenny.assisting with four for 27. Requiring 176 to win, the Australians had no difficult task, and succeeded in scoring them for the loss of two wickets. SCULLING. A CHALLENGE FROM ARNST. Sydney, January .23. Arnst has deposited £IOO .with the Sun newspaper, and has challenged Barry to row this year for the championship of the world and £SOO aside. He claims that Pearce’s challenge has lapsed, owing to his not having signed articles within three months after lodging a deposit. Pearce, also, has not renewed his challenge after the expiration of the three months. Arnst, therefore, demands the first race with Barry. Arnst is willing to meet Pearce for £SOO or less aside in twelve weeks. Pearce could meet Barry in October, or let Arnst go if he wins. Arnst’s backer offers Pearce £IOO towards his expenses if he beats Arnst. Pearce is emphatic on going to England on February 12, and will not row anyone.

THE BARRY -PEARCE RACE. (Received 9.0 a.m.) Sydney, January .24. Barry cables to Pearce that the challenge had not Thpsed, and that the art ides would be signed immediately Pearce arrives, observing the same proceedin'© as in the last races with Arnst and Human. If he beats Pearce Barry is willing to meet Arnst in September, but it must be in England. There is a possibility of Barry retiring at the end of the year. RIFLE SHOOTING. THE NEW PLYMOUTH MATCH. The Stratford Rifle Club sent a team to New Plymouth yesterday, where a triangular match was fired between E Company, 11th Regiment, and the New Plymouth Rifle Club. The wind was tricky, and the scores would have been considerably higher under more favourable conditions. New Plymouth secured a win from Stratford by nineteen points. NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB ft

TRAP-SHOOTINC. (By “Pigeon.”) The Stratford Gun Club held its second competition for the Nobel Ballist tj Cup on the Racecourse yesterday in ideal weather. The shooting showed a little improvement on last time, hut there is still plenty of scope in this direction ,tho scores for the first two cup shoots working out at 7 points per man less than last season—a difference somewhat hard to account for, but due to a certain extent perhaps to the inferior birds in use, the better quality being unobtainable at present. A. Scott, by putting on 35, now leads by 4 points, but with a number of others in handy positions and two shoots to go, it is still anybodys. At the conclusion of the Cup contest, a “first miss out” sweepstake was held, and was won by T. A. Lineham, with 7 birds straight. The day’s sport concluded with a 5-hird sweepstake, which was won rather easily by N. Campbell. The scores were as follows: Ballistite Cup.—A. Scott 35, T. A.. Lineham 30, N. Marsh 28, H. Campbell 27, E. Hollard 27, G. D. McKenzie 22, J. Carter 20, G. Symes 19, N. Vo vie 19, G. Hunter 18, W. J. Hamblyn 16, A. C. Buhlitz 15, H. R. Wickham 11, F. Jans 11, W. Cannon 10, A. Stewart 8.
