MR. MASSEY AT THE THAMES

Thames, January 18
Mr. Massey concluded his visit to the Thames on Saturday. He visited the Hauraki Plains (formerly the Piako Swamp), where extensive drainage operations are being conducted by the Government, and met several deputations, who pressed local requirements upon him. The Prime Minister expressed astonishment at the quality of the land, and the great progress made in settlement. He was confident that it would become one of the most important and successful districts in the Dominion. Mr, Massey promised to do all possible to open up the Hauraki mining lands for settlement. Thousands of acres of bushclad lands are unoccupied, because of the harrassing restrictions regarding the felling of timber, burning, etc., and these will probably be removed, bringing a large area under cultivation. Mr. Massey left for Waikato and Auckland, reaching the latter place today.
