TWO BOYS DROWNED
Melbourne, January 17
Four boys went surfing at St. Kilda nn a dark night. Two were drowned. The only swimmer of the party rescued the third in an unconscious condition.
THE FIELD TRAGEDY
Sydney, January 17
The Coroner found that Field died of a gunshot wound, accidentally inflicted by his son Leslie, who shot Field in self-defence when he thought he was in danger, and intended the shot for another. The evidence of Leslie was that he was agitated at the report that a stranger was above, and he fired two or three shots in his excitement.
FLOODS IN QUEENSLAND
Brisbane, January 17
' Heavy rains have fallen on the coast They were abnormal at Bundaberg, and" Maryborough. Thirty-two inches fell at Bundaberg in 48 hours. The livers are flooding the; Wharves, and low-lying lands are inundated. Many washaways occurred, and the railway traffic is dislocated.
A man named Bax was drowned while crossing a creek at Childers. The rain has eased and the floods are receding.
COAL FROM NEWCASTLE,
(Received 9.40 a.ra.) Sydney, January 18
The coal exports from Newcastle last year were 5,030,308 tons, valued at £2,617,694, compared to 4,061,880 tons valued at £2,116,929 for the previous year.- New Zealand took 534,218 tons compared to 333,208 in the pievious year.
CONFERENCE OF FREEDOM
LEAGUES
Melbourne, January 18
An inter-State Conference of Freedom Leagues condemned compulsory training, and decided to assist in eveiy possible way the trainees who were refusing to serve for conscientious reasons.
BIG FIRE IN SYDNEY
Sydney, January 18
A fire gutted the Australian Chemical Company’s and the National Press Printing Company’s premises.
