TRADE WITH CANADA.
AUSTRALIA’S UNSATISFACTORY POSITION.
(Received 9.25 a.m.) Sydney, December 27. The ‘Herald’ says the increase of trade between New Zealand and Canada is due to the subsidy tor the Vancouver mail service. The increase is, unfortunately, an expense to Australia, whose exports are being gradually elbowed out of the trade because space is unable to bo obtained for cargo, and we are under a handicap in having to pay full duty on the shipments, wnile New Zealanders under reciprocity get a rebate. We desire, and as an Empire Dominion, ought to have, a far larger share of the Canadian market than we possess. It is to be hoped the projected visit of the Canadian Trade Embassy will be used by the Commonwealth Government to the fullest advantage. We have no desire to interfere with New Zealand enterprise devoted to New Zealand development, but it is plain that Australia at present is unduly shut out. Canadian communication must come once more into effective touch with that lost zone of trade, but whether it will be effected by means of a new and independent service or not remains for the decision of the Government.
