Surrey reports having sighted about live miles off Castlepoint (on the East Coast) a derelict, apparently that of a waterlogged sailing vessel, with only fifteen feet of mast showing. Captain Watson, of the s.s. Patecna, does not think that Pclorons Jack has been killed. The last time he saw him was off Jackson Head, and he is of the opinion that the fish has merely changed his range and gone out into the Straits. Invercargill, October 29. A lad named Dennis Taylor, aged 16, was crossing the Mataura River on Monday in a dray when he got into deep water and was Carried down by the current. Both Taylor and the horse were drowned. The body has been recovered.

J The Appeal Court* delivered judg j meat to-day in the ease of the Merchants’ Association of New Zealam v. the King. The main controversy j was as to the right of the Crown te inspect the Association’s minute book on matters referring to other commodities than sugar. The Court was ol opinion that this inspection should be allowed and the appeal was dismissed. Costs were allowed on the middle scale. Leave to appeal to the Privy Council was refused on the ground that the matter was not of great general or public importance. Auckland, October 29. The Northern Boxing Association has arranged with Mr Bris Doyle to visit Australia, America and England, and arrange matches with the world’s champion boxers at Auckland. Owing to the Exhibition being held in 1913, it is intended to erect a stadium to accommodate 5000 spectators. The proposal is to arrange six or seven fights each for a purse of £IOOO. The whole of the Huiitly miners, excepting the dismissed executive and about fifty who had left the district, resumed work to-day. Gore, October 29. Messrs Murrell Bros., after many attempts have •made it possible to have a motor-launch trip between Lakes Manapouri and Te Anau via the Otaiau River. In place of an uninteresting motor ride, tourists are now able to journey between the lakes through the finest river scenery in the Dominion. / Pahiatna, October 29. Mr David Crewe, cx-Mayor, was appointed Mayor of Pahiatna by the borough council last night for the remainder of the late Mayor’s (Mr W. W. McCardlc’s) term of office.
