POLICE CASES AT WAIHI.
SEVENTY CHARLES. (Per Press Association.) Waihi, September 11. An extraordinary amount of interest is being taken in the police cases against strikers to-day. The charges, numbering 70, are for following up engine drivers and arbitrationists, threatening behaviour, insulting and obscene language, and applications for sureties to keep the peace. No lees than fifty strikers have been charged, including Parry (president of the Miners’ Union) and McLennan (vice-pre-sident). About 1000 people have gathered in the vicinity of the Courthouse, where the Warden Court is being held this morning, and it is likely the strikers’ cases will not come on till after the midday adjournment. Yesterday afternoon strikers and their wives took an active part in the affairs at Waikino. About 20 paraded the main thoroughfare in the towusho with a placard attached to the front part of their garments upon which was inscribed in bold lettering “Don’t be traitors to your cause.”

In the strike cases before the Court (Mr. F. V. Fraser. S,M., presiding), Mr. Sohvyn Mays (Crown prosecutor) appeared for the police, and Mr. OJendon for defendants. The first case, involving eighteen strikers, was that ol following and jostling an enginedriver named T. Hoard, and application was made for sureties and good behaviour. The police gave evidence that the driver was followed by a crowd numbering about 200, and war frequently jostlej. The man was terrified, and sought police protection, eventually. The driver took refuge at. the residence of a doctor. The case war proceeding, and is likely to bo lengthy
