AMMUNITION STOLEN

Six Months’ Hard Labour

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, November 2. A soldier, Clifford Leslie Whitham, aged 21, was sentenced to six months’ hard labour in the Magistrate’s Court today for the theft of 700 rounds of .303 rifle ammunition valued at £l4 and belonging to the Army. The police said that when seen taking the ammunition Whitham stated that he was fond of pig shooting and it would come in handy. “Leniency is impossible for such a serious offence,” said the Magistrate, Mr J. H. Luxford, who stressed the gravity of interfering with ammunition placed in a position for tactical purposes.
