PERSONAL

The Hon. Mr Justice Kennedy arrived in Invercargill from Dunedin by the express yesterday afternoon. He will preside at the quarterly sessions of the Supreme Court which open this morning.

Mr A. W. Head, superintendent of Awarua Radio, has been authorized to take and receive statutory declarations, according to a notice in the Gazette.

Lieutenant S. G. Dinniss, who was sub-editor of The Southland Times when he enlisted, has been promoted to the rank of captain (temporary). Mr E. A. Walsh, of Invercargill, has been appointed patrol officer of the Automobile Association (Southland) in place of Mr H. A. McColl, who recently resigned. Because of war conditions the appointment is temporary in the meantime.

Mr W. V. Siddall, who was well known in musical circles in Invercargill 40 or 50 years ago, died in Christchurch on Sunday at the age of about 84. For some 20 years Mr Siddall was conductor of the Invercargill Garrison Band, which under his direction held a foremost place among New Zealand bands. He also conducted orchestras at amateur theatrical performances in those days. Mr W. J. A. Siddall, of Invercargill, is a grandson.

Pilot Officer William Robert Duncan, who has been reported missing on air operations in the Middle East, is a son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Duncan, of Stirling, South Otago. His wife is a daughter of Mr and Mrs P. Klemick, Nightcaps. He was born at Stirling and attended the local primary school and the Balclutha District High School. He enlisted in Wellington, where he was employed in the Civil Service. He gained his commission in Canada early in 1941 and saw service in England and the Middle East.

Among graduates of the twelfth O.C.T.U. to be commissioned is Officer Cadet L. G. de la Perrelle, formerly of Winton.
