OBITUARY

MR J. J. SMITH The death of Mr John James Smith, of Waimatuku, at the age of 62, occurred last week. Mr Smith was one of the best-known farmers in Southland. He was three times champion ploughman of the province and though his farming allowed him little leisure, he was a keen angler and a sportsman. He was one of those farmers who, by industry and the application of intensive farming methods, helped to put Southland in the forefront as a productive province. His wife, formerly Miss E. Nunn, died two years ago and he is survived by a family of five:—Mrs D. King, Mrs B. Hayes, Mrs W. Turnbull, Miss P. Smith and Mi' F. Smith.
