LINEN FLAX CROPS There has been a better response this year by farmers to the appeal to grow linen flax. Promises have been received for the growing of 1100 acres of linen flax, compared with 900 acres last year. This is considered to be satisfactory. In referring to the improvement in the crop prospects for the year Mr W. Faithful, of the Department of Agriculture, said that for a long time farmers had “hung fire,” but lately there had been a rush of inquiries. LAWN TENNIS.— The Anglican Tennis Club had a most successful opening on Saturday afternoon.- More than 30 playing members attended and there was also a good crowd of players from other clubs. The
Rev. W. W. Powell officially declared the courts open for play. He expressed pleasure at the large attendance and expressed the hope that the club would enjoy a successful season. During the afternoon a Yankee tournament was held and some good form was shown for so early in the season. The tournament was won by Mrs G. Allison and J. Walders, who beat Mrs P. F. de la Perrelle and Miss de la Perrelle in the final. A consolation round was also played and resulted in a win for Miss J. Watters and PF. de la Perrelle.
NEW RATION BOOKS.— Up to Saturday morning 5746 new ration books had been issued at Gore, the total number issued on Friday being more than 1000. About 2000 persons have yet to be supplied. The special staff of the post office has also been busy dealing with inquiries for the special clothing sheets and the number so far Issued la 1263.
