TENNIS OUTLOOK NOT GOOD

Shortage Of Balls

At file moment prospects for the tennis season in Invercargill do not appear bright. Although entries have been received from 23 teams for a three-grade women’s competition, the position concerning supplies of balls does not appear very hopeful. One or two clubs, which have already obtained a dozen or more balls, are beginning to wonder how they will last out the season, but their position is much better than that of many clubs who have no balls at all on hand. The Southland Lawn Tennis Association has arranged a canvass of sports depots with a view to buying up and rationing out to clubs what balls are available, but no success has so far been achieved. In Invercargill itself apparently no balls are to be obtained, but it is possible that somewhere in the district a small supply may be available. In the meantime, the only course that the association can adopt is to prepare for a competition on the assumption that supplies will be available, and to cancel the fixtures later if none come to hand. Advice from Australia is that the manufacture of tennis balls ceased there in March last, and tennis players cannot look forward to any fresh supplies from overseas. Australian tennis will probably cease by the end of the year, except at State headquarters.

The inter-club competitions are to open on Saturday with games in all three grades, and the following is the draw: —

A Grade—Waihopai v. Invercargill I at Invercargill; Invercargill II v. Rugby Park I at Rugby Park; St. Mary’s v. Rugby Park II at St. Mary’s. B Grade—Gladstone v. Rugby Park at Rugby Park; Bluff v. St. Mary’s at Bluff; Invercargill v. Southern at Southern; Waikiwi v. Southend at Southend. C Grade—Bluff a bye; Moana v. St. Mary’s at Moana; Waihopai v. Southern at Waihopai; Collegiate v. Wallacetown at Collegiate; Invercargill I v. Invercargill II at Invercargill. Sets in A grade will be the best of 17 games and in B and C grades the best of 13 games.
